From Me to We

After a day full of homework dinner time had finally arrived. I was so excited for a break! I grabbed the plate of food with a delicious looking Grilled Cheese sandwich made by none other than my amazing fiance and immediately headed over to the couch. I expected him to follow but he didn’t so I turned to  him with a confused look on his face.

“Can I watch a movie while I eat?” I asked.

In the most loving way possible he said, “We will get crumbs on the couch.”

This situation was a wake up call for me. Our lifestyles growing up were completely different and I knew this but I never really understood how that effected our every day lives. At his house family dinners were a norm. For me it was just for holidays or special occasions and to be honest, I hadn’t participated in many of them. Despite the awkward eating habits, the biggest thing I noticed was how I came across. When I asked him to watch a movie, the question had an “I” with it.

Unlike David, I didn’t know what “we” meant.

As I look back at this funny situation I can’t help but laugh at myself. My life isn’t about “me” anymore. In the past year God has taken this lonely girl and made her a daughter and a soon to be bride. Talk about intense! Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been praying for a family for 3 years and I am so happy and thankful for this blessing that God has given me but I am also very ignorant to the concept. Every day I learn more about what it means to be a “we”. I would be lying if I said that this learning process wasn’t stressful but I couldn’t ask for a better person and family to help teach me what true companionship means. While eating that fabulous dinner of Grilled Cheese I learned that I needed to do better at paying attention to my family’s needs. When I do something I need to take them into consideration before I act out on it.

As you walk through your day today I encourage you to think about the other people in your life that make you a “we”. Is there anything you could do better to make sure you are not relaying a message of “I”? If your life is anything like mine, this transition is a roller coaster of confusion and daily lessons but that’s why it’s so important to look at the bigger picture. Life isn’t supposed to be about “me” anyways. Having God in our lives automatically takes us from “me” to “we”.

Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone–especially to those in the family of faith.
~ Galatians 6:10
